I’m home again—no, not home. We’re pulling into Eve’s drive. Oh, dear. How I would love to go back to my own house and curl up in my recliner with a cup of tea. I sink back into the seat and sigh. At least I can have the cup of tea. But a lady bursts out of a house two doors down and comes rushing up to Eve, all out of breath, grabbing her arm and saying something about the Fire Department and Rosie and damage. The kitchen is freezing when we walk in, and the window is wide open.

Rosie has burnt something in the toaster and nearly taken the house down with it? Surely not. Mrs. Thingy must have it all wrong. Although there is a smell of smoke. And Rosie has actually demolished a card Michel sent her in grade three. Why ever would she do that? A vague thought floats just out of reach: something about little Rosie waiting and waiting for the mail…crying. I look over at the garbage, wondering why Rosie hasn’t…but we did want to turn Rosie against…didn’t we? I can’t remember why for the moment, but maybe this is worth a bit of smoke. Anyway, it can’t mean anything bad because Eve is standing in the middle of the kitchen, laughing. She should laugh more often—such a beautiful sound, like bells pealing, chime after chime round the kitchen. Eve says it’s about time they bought a new toaster—one that would maybe brown both sides at once. I head for the living room. It’s too cold to sit in the kitchen.

“Can I have a cup of tea?”
